Foxconn Group
Introduction
Yuankang Agriculture is a subsidiary of Foxconn Group, located in Shenzhen, China. This was our first large-scale, international project. Its purpose was to feed Foxconn's factory workers.
YesHealth Group was responsible for the technology research and development, installation, and technology transfer, training the local team to operate the vertical farm independently.
We completed its construction in 2018. It remains one of the largest vertical farms ever built, and it represents our first successful transfer of technology to a global partner.
Feeding the world's factory
Foxconn is one of China's largest employers. It employs more than 1.3 million people nationwide, and a few hundred-thousand of those workers are based at the factory in Longhua Technology Park, Shenzhen.
The purpose of this farm was to offer healthy and sustainable food options to the Foxconn Longhua Technology Park workers. Fresh produce would be harvested every day to supply the factory's canteen.
With a maximum daily yield of 2500 kg, this farm could produce enough leafy greens to feed a significant part of the workforce. And it could grow different varieties, according to the workers' preference.
Designing the experience
Just like YesHealth iFarm, which we built one year earlier, this was more than just a farm. It was designed to replicate the experiential learning center concept at our HQ in Taiwan.
Visitors could tour the farm and learn about the technologies inside. Meanwhile, we could showcase our commercial ability with a view to building similar farms all across China.
We did in fact build other farms across China, but neither at this scale nor with the experiential learning center concept. This farm could accommodate thousands of visitors every day.
Building Asia's largest vertical farm
The farm's construction took less than one year (watch the video below). It began in September 2017 and reached completion in May 2018. After a further month of testing, it was fully operational.
While the farm underwent construction, a small team of operators and technicians were trained at YesHealth iFarm in Taiwan, preparing them to kickstart production in Shenzhen.
Thanks to similar configurations at both farms, they were able to use the same SOP from Taiwan. And although this farm is no longer operational, we remain proud of our achievements there.
